Dr. Shumer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology. He received his bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in 2003 and his medical degree from the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in 2008. He completed his Pediatric Residency at Vermont Children’s Hospital at the University of Vermont, where he also served as Chief Resident. Dr. Shumer then completed fellowship training in Pediatric Endocrinology at Boston Children’s Hospital and concurrently completed a Masters of Public Health at Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, graduating in 2015. During his fellowship training at Boston Children’s Hospital, Dr. Shumer was mentored by Dr. Norman Spack, a pioneer in providing hormonal care for transgender adolescents. Dr. Shumer’s research has specifically focused on improving mental health disparities in the transgender community. He has clinical expertise in this area, as well as disorders of sex development and general pediatric endocrinology and diabetes.
