The DMD Clinic

The Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) Clinic at the University of Michigan is a multidisciplinary clinic that sees children and adults with a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy.  We also have a Transitional Care Clinic, which specifically focuses on the care of teenagers and young adults with neuromuscular conditions transitioning to adulthood.  The DMD clinic is sponsored in part by the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), as well as through the generous support of private donors.

What to expect during a visit

The DMD clinic meets on Thursday Mornings.  Our clinic team includes specialists in:

  • Neurology
  • Cardiology
  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Orthopedics
  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R)
  • Physical and Occupational Therapy
  • Genetic Counseling
  • Neuropsychology
  • Social Work
  • Dietary

The DMD clinic utilizes a 2-day format for those patients who need tests such as cardiac MRI, echocardiogram, pulmonary function tests, polysomnograms, etc., prior to meeting the specialists.

Research

The University of Michigan DMD Clinic is committed to improve the functional outcomes of its patients and actively participates in clinical research. Participation in clinical research is voluntary and refusal will not affect the care patients receive.
