Newborn intensive care units provide specialized, intensive care and treatment to newborns that are critically ill. Patients can be seen in this unit with a variety of conditions including those associated with premature birth and complex medical or surgical problems. The American Academy of Pediatrics provides criteria for designation of level of care that a hospital nursery can provide. These levels range from Level 1 to Level 4 with Level 4 nurseries providing the most intensive care. Level 4 nurseries are capable of providing the most advanced care such as heart lung bypass, also known as ECMO, as well as neonatal surgery and cardiac surgery.
Our Newborn Intensive Care Unit is a Level 4, 52-bed unit. Many of our patients are born 1 floor away in our Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital. The NICU also accepts babies from all over the Midwest and routinely accepts transfers from other NICUs for specialized medical, cardiac and general and specialty surgical care.
