Music Therapy Internship
C.S. Mott Children's Hospital provides a comprehensive music therapy internship program under the supervision of a team of board-certified Music Therapists. Interns complete their required internship hours in a full-time schedule.
Training for our music therapy interns includes education on various philosophies of music therapy, introduction to advanced music therapy certifications such as NICU-MT or NMT, participation in interdisciplinary team meetings, and the opportunity to create programming through Sophie’s Place.
Population, Settings and Geography:
Our interns will have the opportunity to work with patients from birth into adolescence. Rotation units may include Oncology/Hematology, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Care Unit, Cardiac Step-Down Unit, Dialysis, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, General Care Unit, and Sophie’s Place.
Internship Expectations:
Interns will be involved in interdisciplinary team meetings and advocate for their patients as well as provide knowledge to other team members regarding the benefits of music therapy. Interns can expect to work 40 hours per week, and they will be supervised in a rotating schedule with multiple members of the music therapy team. Interns should expect to shadow their supervisors for a set amount of time, before co-leading, and becoming independent in their rotations. Interns will have the opportunity to be fully independent in the last months of their internship, as agreed upon by the internship coordinator, and determine which units they continue to follow.
Throughout their internship, interns will have their own caseload of patients on whom they will be following independently. Interns will complete both a case study and project related to their internship and present the Child and Family Life Department. In addition, interns have the opportunity to provide support for Patient and Caregiver groups on various units, run Closed-Circuit TV programming through Sophie’s Place, and shadow members of the interdisciplinary team.
Philosophy of Training Interns:
The belief and mission of University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and our music therapy internship program is to provide each student with individualized instruction. All interns have different learning styles, and it is our mission to adapt to these learning styles to support students in their personal growth of knowledge in clinical applications and research. Subsequent to this mission, our goals are to approach each student in a humanistic and holistic manner through targeting immediate needs of interns first and prioritizing needs to foster learning. In addition, encouraging interns to achieve a healthy balance of mind, body and spirit will ultimately enhance positive coping and growth for each student to explore themselves deeper as clinicians. We intend to support interns by offering opportunities to observe, co-treat, attend seminars, review written work/personal journals, and encourage verbal-processing.
