NIH selects U-M as key site for national research consortium

C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital re-designated as a Pediatric Heart Network core site.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. —  The Congenital Heart Center at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital was again selected as a core site in the Pediatric Heart Network (PHN).

Created and funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, the PHN is a cooperative network of pediatric cardiovascular clinical research centers that participate in transformative research focusing on congenital and acquired heart disease in children.

“Collaboration across centers is essential to address many of the important questions impacting children with heart disease,” says Caren Goldberg, MD, co-principal investigator of the U-M PHN grant.  “We’re honored to continue to serve as one of the PHN’s core sites.”

U-M will function as one of nine core sites, and Michigan’s only PHN site.  The grant provides $2.3 million in research funding over a period of seven years to support collaborative PHN research studies.

“Our participation in the PHN means we are able to offer our patients and families the opportunity to participate in important research and studies investigating cutting edge therapies,” says Sara Pasquali MD, co-principal investigator.

Richard Ohye, MD, who led the PHN Single Ventricle Reconstruction Trial (the first multi-center congenital heart surgery randomized trial ever accomplished) joins Drs. Goldberg and Pasquali as a third U-M co-principal investigator.

U-M Congenital Heart Center investigators also lead the PHN biorepository, which manages DNA storage for PHN studies (Mark Russell, MD), and the PHN Integrated CARdiac Data and Outcomes (iCARD) Collaborative, which integrates data across multiple sources to conduct novel studies and support more efficient research (Sara Pasquali, MD).
